56 degrees north

Tha installation is time-based and consists of 4 interactive elements:
- a curve coated in blue photo-luminous paint
- a window masked to leave a section of sky
- a tapered wooden form painted fluorescent orange
- a lightbox switching on/off every 5 minutes

16.14 (light on)
The work begins at sunset. Form and colour function as metaphor - transition, twilight, a dialogue of opposites. The geometries are also aligned in actual space. The orange transitional form is placed precisely at an angle of 56 degrees and aligned north. It is parallel to Earth's axis (the core mechanism of rotation which generates twilight) and points to the Pole Star (the stillpoint of the sky).

16.30 (light off)
The lightbox activates a synthetic twilight in luminous blue paint.

16.45 (light on)
The installation space gradually darkens. There is a periodic return to the fixed reference point of the light box. The 'dark adjustment' mechanism of the eye is interrupted. Subtle changes in twilight appear to be amplified.

17.00 (light off)
Light and darkness, artificial light and natural light, inner space and outer space, measured time and continuous unfolding time, streetlight and starlight.

spring equinox
0.51km x 149,000,000km x 934km/hr x 108,000km/hr

At equinox the sun rises exactly in the east and twelve hours later it sets exactly in the west. Albert Street in Leith is aligned to an east-west axis.

"... a series of interlinked works in wood, foil, felt and beautiful blue resin, which at first, look like a series of discrete minimalist forms. In fact the series of circles, curves and poles form a reasoned meditation on the absorption and reflection of light, the dance of the sun and moon and the rather grim experience of SAD, seasonal affective disorder."
